Q: What is your preferred format and why?
A: This greatly depends on the story.  In most circumstances I prefer to shoot on film because it creates distinct mood. Film always proves itself to be versatile enough for any environment and it organically captures the world.  It’s alive and it enables a streamlined workflow that’s been in practice since the start of our industry. But, I do think a project can be accomplished in many formats. Certain formats lend themselves more affectively to different stories. And I often find that no single format is the obvious choice.  But, a best choice can be made based on the production in general—remoteness of locations, delivery, budget, DOF, aspect ratio etc. Even shooting multiple formats for one production can be a strong creative tool.  All of these components need to be taken into consideration when choosing a format.
Q: What does it take to make great images?
A: Ingenuity, determination, planning and patience. I have always believed that tools do not make the craftsman. There are many examples of people making great images in the wildest ways and the budget doesn’t always allow for a Technocrane or a PHANTOM. The lack of these tools allows us to dig deeper—to think in wider terms to accomplish the project., ultimately offering us the chance to be better filmmakers.
